The Covenant

04 Jun 2013, Posted by BoB in All Posts, Personal Topics, Spiritual Talk

Thanks to my beloved church I am continually growing and now have a clear understanding that marriage is not a status, contract or just a means to “rightly” bring children into the world. This is a decision to join in to a covenant (stronger than just any contract). See chart below for the contract vs. covenant breakdown.

Woman’s Requirements:
Colossians 3:18 – Submit
Ephesians 5:33 – Respect your husband
1Corinthians 7:5 – Don’t deprive your husband sexually

*NOTE* The marriage covenant is primarily with God

Man’s Requirements:
Ephesians 5:25-28 – Man leave his mother and father
1. The man is meant to lay down his life (dreams, goals, etc.) for his wife
2. Man is meant to love his wife
3. A man commits to the word
4. A man loves his wife as himself
5. A man loves his wife as his own body

1Peter 3:7
1. Treat her with respect
2. Treat her as the weaker vessel
3. Be gracious and considerate

1Timothy 5:8 – Provide
Colossians 3:19 – Don’t be harsh
1Corinthians 7:5 – Don’t deprive your wife sexually

This is not my home church but thank you to http://vcbweb.org/ for providing this chart for a clearer understanding of a contract vs. a covenant.

CONTRACT
Obligation: “I have to.”
Impersonal: “Involves something I have or do.”
Conditional: “If you do you part, I’ll do mine.”
Leverage: “I look out for my own best interest.”
Suspicion: “I want assurance that you will do your part.”
Business: “What will it take?”
Compromise: “I’ll meet you halfway.”
Temporary: “Once all stipulations have been met, the contract is over.”
COVENANT
Opportunity: “I want to.”
Personal: “Involves all that I am.”
Unconditional: “I’ll do my part whether you do yours or not.”
Loyalty: “I am looking out for your best interest.”
Trust: “I will certainly do my part.”
Relational: “Whatever it takes!”
Sacrifice: “I’ll give 100%.”
Permanent: “I will continue to do this as long as I draw breath.”

And remember guys… women don’t always want to be fixed, no matter how obvious the solution.
